The Best North American Sports Events this Summer

2008 NBA Finals

With May just around the corner, we’re all looking forward to celebrating another gorgeous North American summer. While sun, sea and sand may be just a few things to get excited about, we’re also guaranteed a summer of heart-stopping sports action – the Super Bowl may be over for another year, but that doesn’t mean we’re out of options. Here are just a few events to get excited about, whatever sport you’re into.

US Open: June 18th-21st, Washington

Following his recent success at the US Masters, all eyes are on Jordan Spieth to win his first Grand Slam this year. The 21-year-old will be returning for the US Open at Washington’s Chambers Bay this June, and he’ll be joined by a whole host of golfing professionals including the World No.1 Rory McIlroy. This year will be a particularly exciting year for golfing fans, who, after being astounded by 25-year-old McIlroy in the last 12 months, will be even more impressed by this spring chicken.

NBA Finals: June (date and location TBA – USA/Canada)

After sensationally beating Miami Heat in last season’s NBA finals, the San Antonio Spurs have a lot to prove if they are to walk home with the trophy once again. We’re currently in the midst of the NBA playoffs, and with just a few months to go before the finals, many sports pundits are already predicting that the Spurs will emerge triumphant once again. Their ongoing feud with Miami Heat is nothing short of dramatic, causing many sports fans to hope they face up to each other for a third year running.

US Open (Tennis): August 31st – September 13th

Head over to New York’s Flushing Meadows this August to experience some of the most exciting tennis this side of the Atlantic. This year will see the return of champion Marin Čilić, as well as some of our old favourites such as Andy Murray, who will be fresh from fighting on home soil at Wimbledon this July. As one of the most prestigious tennis titles, this is one sporting event that’s not to be missed in 2015.

US Grand Prix: October 23rd-25th

It may not technically be the summer months, but this October the most exciting motorsport event comes to the USA – Formula 1. The US Grand Prix takes place in Austin, Texas, and will see some of the most talented racing drivers taking to the tracks to gain that all important first prize in November. Of course, if you can’t wait until October for your Formula 1 fix, you can always head to the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal from June 5th-7th.
